IQNA – More than 58,000 tonnes of Zamzam water have been supplied to worshippers at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina this year, Saudi authorities say.

The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque reported that the effort involved the transportation of 3,348 specially-equipped tankers, designed to ensure contamination-free delivery.

Since the beginning of 2024, officials noted that over 208 million cups of Zamzam water have been distributed at the mosque, with more than 23,000 water samples tested to uphold strict safety and quality standards.

These measures are part of ongoing efforts by Saudi authorities to improve services for visitors to this sacred site, the report added.

Zamzam water holds a revered place in Islamic tradition, believed to have a miraculous origin dating back to the time of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Ismail (Ishmael).

According to tradition, Zamzam sprang from the ground in a barren desert to provide water for Hajar (Hagar), the wife of Ibrahim, during her search for water for her son.

Located within the sacred precincts of the Masjid Al Haram in Mecca, the Zamzam well continues to supply water for millions of pilgrims each year.

Muslims regard Zamzam water not only for its purity but also for its spiritual significance, believing it brings blessings and healing. Many pilgrims consume Zamzam during their pilgrimage and bring it home to share with loved ones.
